Tell anyone you’re staying at The Phoenician Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona, and you’ll likely be met with exclamations of “Ah I love that place!” or “Oooh you’re so lucky!” It’s no wonder: the luxe retreat in the Sonoran desert has been winning accolades for years, including the AAA Five Diamond award for a decade straight.
The resort is part of the esteemed Luxury Collection, and highlights include a world-class golf course, beautifully designed rooms, fantastic dining options and perfectly-manicured grounds framed by Camelback Mountain. The sprawling hideaway easily accommodates everyone, whether you’re looking to enjoy a family vacation, couples retreat, guys’ weekend or girls’ getaway. Here are five reasons to stay at The Phoenician next time you’re in Arizona.
Thanks to a fresh update, the suites at The Phoenician are absolutely incredible. The resort has about 600 guest rooms, including free-standing casitas, The Phoenician Residences, and the highly acclaimed Canyon Suites.
Some guests prefer the rooms which are attached to the main building, conveniently located near the restaurants and pools. Alternatively, book one of the luxurious casitas situated near the spa and golf course, which include floor-to-ceiling windows leading to private balconies with warm fire pits or couches, modernist finishings, Italian linens, and marble bathrooms with walk-in closets. Those looking for the ultimate escape will want to stay in one of the 1800 square-foot Presidential Suites, which boast a full kitchen, living room with a marble dining table big enough to seat 10, and two private patios.
The best way to beat the desert heat is to hit the pool, and The Phoenician has no shortage of them. Kids love the Surge Splash Pad, waterslide, and the basketball hoop and volleyball nets that are set up right in the water for some friendly competition.
Adults can relax on loungers scattered around the multiple decks, while taking advantage of the poolside food and beverage service (hello mojitos!). Celebrating something special or just want a bit more space to spread out? Be sure to reserve one of the private cabanas, which include a dedicated server, docking station and sunscreen kit.
Having the alarm clock go off at 5:30 a.m. is usually the last thing people want on vacation, but an early wakeup call it well worth it when staying at The Phoenician. That’s because the resort is just steps away from the Camelback Mountain trailhead, making it the perfect place to enjoy a sunrise hike. It only takes about 45 minutes to walk to the best vantage point, and the views do not disappoint:
Back on the resort there are plenty of scenic spots to explore, including a two-acre cactus garden with 250 varieties of succulents and cacti. There are also 11 sculptures by renowned artist Allan Houser scattered around the property, and plenty of cascading waterfalls surrounded by lush flora and fauna.
When it comes time for sunset, head out to your private balcony or the outdoor patio outside J&G Steakhouse to catch the spectacular sight of pink and purple hues dancing across the desert sky.
The Phoenician gets top marks when it comes to activities, as there are seemingly unlimited options to keep guests of all ages entertained. Along with its immaculate 27-hole championship golf course, the resort offers tennis courts, bicycles, scavenger hunts and guided hikes.
One of the most memorable offerings is the I. FLY Trapeze, where daredevils channel their inner acrobat and learn how to fly on a trapeze and do a backflip onto the netting below (which surprisingly isn’t as difficult as it sounds). Once guests master that trick, they’re taught how to do a catch and release, which sees them fly through the air and link up with an instructor swinging towards them simultaneously, grabbing each others wrists and letting go mid-air. What a thrill!
A trip to The Phoenician wouldn’t be complete without visiting The Centre for Well-Being. The facility houses a salon, fitness centre, steam room, pools and a spa offering signature treatments. Try the warm spice scrub and massage, which starts off with a cinnamon, nutmeg and mandarin scrub to exfoliate your skin, before a relaxing full-body massage. Other treatments include hot stone rituals, body wraps and Vitamin C infused facials. Complete the experience with a session in the meditation atrium, where you’ll be guided through a practice guaranteed to clear your mind of all those nagging thoughts—or send you into a peaceful slumber.
